Kitchen door header

We had a mad dash to get masonry repairs on the roof around the chimney and parapet done before it gets too cold.

We have tons more masonry repair ahead of us, but on the inside of the building. This became a critical task after we determined that we would like to insulate with spray polyurethane foam. It is a good idea to get those repairs done now, rather than to be forced to cover them up with spray foam later.

Thanks god, we’ve had a long Indian summer this year. The mild temperatures allowed us to keep going on the masonry repairs in our unheated house.

So – what are we tackling first? How about the header over the back kitchen door?

The transom over the door is not original. When it was added the brick work was not the best and a half-hearted, one row, segmental brick arch was added as a header. Typical for our building is a two row segmental brick arch.

I was able to fix the brick work, re-point the first arch and then add a second arch for more strength and to match all other headers.
